The Top Things I Do To Manage My Anxiety
May 24, 2023
1) I don’t drink alcohol
2) I take cold showers every day
3) I do Deliberate Breath Work every day
Here’s my why for each…
Alcohol is NOT helping you. AT ALL.
It’s been 3.5 years since I last had a drink of alcohol. I would drink alcohol to help celebrate milestones, but also to deal with my anxiety and depression.
Had a rough day, wine.
Had a good day, wine.
It did not help in either case.
Right now, there’s a considerable amount of stress and anxiety, and triggers coming up in my life and I know that the last thing that will help is alcohol. I also know that I’m a mirror for people who are still drinking. And as a result, a lot of you might ignore this.
The facts are…
1) Alcohol is proven to spike our anxiety levels and worsen depression. If you have any anxiety - cut that shit out.
2) Alcohol is actual poison.
3) I couldn’t be serious about mental/physical health and growth AND still consume alcohol
It’s the single, most transformative thing I’ve done in my healing and growth journey.
Cold Showers is a daily exercise in conscious discomfort…
Every single day, I have a cold shower. Most people scoff or roll their eyes when I tell them this. They HATE being cold. Or they cant imagine doing this.
There’s a few significant reasons I haven’t missed a cold shower in over three and a half years.
1) It’s proof every day, that I can do hard things. Conscious discomfort friends. It reinforces the identity and belief system that I can do hard things. That I can withstand what feels terrible. It’s a form of exposure therapy that helps me build resiliences to stress and discomfort
2) They stimulate my nervous system, releasing noradrenaline which is a hormone that helps boost alertness and mental clarity.
3) It helps increase mental toughness and discipline. The regular subjection to cold water helps to cultivate my mental toughness, willpower, and discipline. Which helps me navigate the challenges that life will inevitably throw at me.
Deliberate Breath Work changes EVERYTHING
Deliberate breath work is a profound tool for managing stress, depression, and anxiety, providing a direct pathway for me to inner calm and resilience. By consciously regulating my breath, I tap into the intricate connection between the mind and body, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and triggering a relaxation response.
This intentional practice soothes my racing thoughts, eases the burden of emotional weight, and fosters a sense of groundedness. Through deep, mindful breaths, I cultivate a home within myself, allowing me to release tension, find solace in the present moment, and reclaim control over my mental and emotional well-being.
Breath work is my guiding light amidst the storm, empowering me to navigate the challenges of life with renewed clarity, serenity, and an unwavering inner strength.
